Résumé :
En pénétrant dans les salons organisés au
Louvre entre 1815 et 1850, événement annuel parisien du monde
romantique, on découvre un aperçu des quelques 3 000 toiles exposées
pour près d’un million de visiteurs.
C’est un film à grand spectacle, car la peinture d’alors
est avant tout populaire. Elle présente le monde, ses mythes, son histoire
et son actualité en un gigantesque panorama. Certes, il y a Ingres, Delacroix,
Géricault, mais aussi des milliers d’autres peintres à la
formidable technique. Tous ils poursuivent le rêve de saisir la diversité
et la complexité de l’univers. Ce film montre comment cette peinture,
loin d’être désuète, marque de ses peurs et de ses
enthousiasmes le début de notre monde moderne.

Entering the “salons” organized in the Louvre between
1815 and 1850, one of the artistic events of the romantic circles in Paris,
the film present some of the 3000 paintings hanged there for over a million
visitors.
It is an epic film, for this painting is nothing but popular. It embraces the
history of the world, its myths, its topical events. Of course there
are Ingres, Delacroix, Géricault, but also thousand of painters with
a tremendous technique. All are haunted by reproducing the diversity and the
complexity of the universe. this film shows how this painting, far from being
outdated, marks the beginning of the modern era with its fears and its enthousiasms.
